Heaven of Hell - Luke 17:29-30
Saturday Feb 09, 2019
Saturday Feb 09, 2019
It's sure not fashionable anymore to talk about fire and brimstone in sermons, and, in fact, you know, you hear so many people who were turned off by the church or by the preacher for preaching about it. But the Bible talks about hell. In fact, the Bible talks about hell a lot. Fortunately, it also talks about heaven a lot, and it also talks about the forgiveness of Christ a lot.
Family Discussions:
- With all that truth in this little book, why do you think so many people are reluctant to admit that God will one day punish sin?
- If hell is real and if hell is serious, what do you think about God's coming judgment of sin?
- What are you going to do about it today?
- What are you going to do for somebody in your school or your home or in your workplace that needs to know about the saving life of Christ?
Episode Transcription:
00:13 If you're wondering what it felt like to be in a house that was literally burning down with fire, well, in a minute, I'm going to tell you what it felt like. I've been there. Luke chapter 17, verse 29 and 30, talks about that, and it says this, "But on the day that Lot went out from Sodom," Jesus is speaking here, he says, "It rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. It will be just the same on the day that the Son of Man is revealed. I have a dear friend. He's a Texan, and he is a pistol, one the most interesting guys I've ever met. But the other day he had a head on collision. It was a high speed collision, and his car not only smashed in and wedged him into the car, but his car caught on fire. Desperately, the rescuers somehow helped him get out of the broken window of his car, and he said, "You know what, Joey?" he said, "For the first time in my life I realized what hell was like." He said, "I was alone, and I was trapped, and I was on fire."
01:17 Um, you know, what it's sure not fashionable anymore to talk about fire and brimstone in sermons, and, in fact, you know, you hear so many people who were turned off by the church or by the preacher for preaching about it. But the Bible talks about hell. In fact, the Bible talks about hell a lot. Fortunately, it also talks about heaven a lot, and it also talks about the forgiveness of Christ a lot. I'll never forget when my buddy Kyle Dodd and Sharon's house caught on fire. Little Daniel had come in with seed ticks all over him, and Sharon wiped the seed ticks off with this little rag, and then she lit the rag on fire to kill the seed ticks, stomped the fire out, and then threw it in the trashcan, thinking the fire was out. But the fire wasn't out, and the next thing she knew, her garage was on fire, and then the kitchen was on fire. And I piled into the house with Kyle and the firemen, and we had fire hoses shooting flames out all over the house, getting possessions out of the house, and then the fire became so hot that we too had to leave the house with the firemen, until the house was literally burned completely.
02:23 You know what? Hell is a place that I absolutely don't want to go at the end of my life. Um, but you know, the Bible says that the results of sin is death. The results of sin is eternal death. The results of sin is hell. "But it's God's," as Paul says in scripture, "Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Though we deserve death, we get eternal life in a relationship with Christ." Galatians three actually says, folks, that Jesus became the curse. He became the "sin curse." He clothed himself with our sin, so that we would never have to see the gates of hell.
03:05 If there's any greater love than that, I'd love to know what it is. And my question to you today is with all that truth in this little book, why do you think so many people are reluctant to admit that God will one day punish sin? If hell is real and if hell is serious, what do you think about God's coming judgment of sin and then the most important question is what are you going to do about it today? You know, what are you going to do for somebody in your school or your home or in your workplace that needs to know about the saving life of Christ? And the thought for the day is, man, this morning, simply thank God for forgiving your sins.
