The Treasure in Our Hearts - 2 Corinthians 4:7-10

"Christ hides himself in these just common old peanut butter jars of our heart."
Family Discussion:
- Without Jesus, how valuable are you? But with Christ in your heart how valuable is that peanut butter jar of your heart?
- How does that give you today the gift of humility that God would think enough of your heart, the old peanut butter jar to put his spirit in you?

00:04 One of my greatest heroes is Dr. Howard Hendricks, and Dr. Hendricks taught me something one time, that man, I'll think about it every time I read this passage in Second Corinthians chapter 4 verses 7-10. It says this, "but we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed, perplexed, but not despairing, persecuted but not abandoned, struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the dying of Jesus so that the life of Jesus might be manifested in our body."
00:54 You know, I've got to break the routine today and just lead a major cheer in your home. I like this book we're studying together. This second Corinthians letter is just packed with God's greatest treasures. And, and you know what, speaking of treasures man, there is not, nor will there ever be, a treasure as absolutely invaluable as the mega karat diamond jewel of the Holy Spirit of Christ that hides himself in the treasure chest of your heart as a true believer and a follower of Jesus Christ. Doctor Hendrick's calls it peanut butter jars. Christ hides himself in these just common old peanut butter jars of our heart. You know, when I was a kid, my dad worked awfully hard to come home with enough money to put beans and burgers and peanut butter & jelly on the table. You know, we didn't starve, but we didn't have a whole lot of leftovers to feed our little dog Pixie, either. My mom was a champion at stretching the dollar and she'd save everything of potential value. Peanut butter jars and jelly jars, man, we drank out of those things. Her mom had taught her to save buttons, rare coins, toy marbles, trading stamps, and she'd saved stuff like that in peanut butter jars.
02:18 You know what, I remember one Friday night, we even put a handful of fireflies of lightening bugs in a peanut butter jar to make a natural flashlight for a game we were playing in the darkness of our room. Treasures, treasures in peanut butter jars. It seems ironic, doesn't it? But you know what? When I think of God putting his greatest treasure in the heart of a man who's failed as many times as I have, I feel just like a peanut butter jar - used, washed, spotless, and somehow filled with a treasure, so I can share some of the rare and priceless jewels with folks who come my way. And so it is with you. You may feel like a peanut butter jar yourself, but God thinks enough of you to fill your heart with his greatest treasure. Isn't that great?
03:08 Here's the question for today. How valuable is a used peanut butter jar by itself? And without Jesus, how valuable are you? But with Christ in your heart, with the Holy Spirit of God, living in your heart, now, how valuable is that peanut butter jar of your heart? And how does that give you today the gift of humility that God would think enough of your heart, the old peanut butter jar to put his spirit in you? How humble does that make you feel today? The lifeline for today to this: When I'm empty, if I would fall, I would break. But, when I'm filled with God's treasures, if I break and fall, it's the strongest treasure chest on earth.

What's the crown that you're working for in your life?
Family Discussion:
- What are you training for?
- What's your spiritual workout schedule? Do you have one? If you do, describe it.

00:04 If you wanted to be a truly great golfer, a great golfer, or if you ever wanted to be great at anything, I mean among the world's best, well, check this one out today and maybe you can. First Corinthians Chapter 9 Verse 24-27, it says this. "Don't you know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. Everyone who competes in a game goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore, I do not run like a man running aimlessly. I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.
01:09 The story goes of a man who wanted to be a great golfer and the story goes, I'm not sure it's true, but he went to Jack Nicholas and he said, "Mister Nicholas, I love the way you play the game. How do you play it so well? How do you win the greatest prize of all?" And he said, it's easy. Wake up with the sun. Go out and hit golf balls until your hands bleed, till you've got blisters on your hands and then go eat a little breakfast, then go back out on the range and hit till your hands are bleeding some more. And then eat lunch and then go hit golf balls until you can't hold the club any longer. Then go eat supper. And then after supper go hit golf balls until it's dark. And he said, do that for two years and you'll be among the greatest of golf.
01:49 You know what? That is the same kind of tenacity Paul was expressing when he used the phrase that I might win five times. He used that phrase in a span of four verses. What was he trying to win? What was he trying to win? What was he trying to win? You know what? I think he was trying to win souls. Paul placed evangelism over every aspect of life, he even set aside his own rights when it meant the salvation of another human being. I remember one time when much son Cooper was in ninth grade and every night that I was home, I would tuck him in bed, unless I did my other kids, and we'd memorize a Bible verse together and we'd pray together. And I looked at Cooper who was a young sprouting high school quarterback, the end of the big halls of the high school and I said "Cooper, I've got a vision for you, man. When you graduate from high school, one of your buddies is going to come up to you and he's gonna say Cooper because of you, I became a Christian." Well, he didn't want to hear that goal at night. He had other goals in mind, like all-state in football. His junior year in high school, I walked by his room and I saw something that I'll never forget. Cooper was down there leading his best friend, Jared to Christ. And you know what? I went upstairs and I waited and pretty soon here came this kid of mine up the stairs and he looked like Moses just come down the mountain of the 10 Commandments. His face was glistening. He said, "Dad." He said, "you'll never believe what just happened in my room tonight." And I said, "Cooper, what happened down there?"
03:16 He said, "dad, I just led Jared to Christ." And I said, "Cooper, that's awesome." He said, "dad, you remember a couple of years ago, you had that vision for me, you know, about leading one of my friends to Christ?" And I said, "yeah." He said, "that's the last thing I wanted to hear in ninth grade." But he said, "dad, that's all I want to do with the rest of my life." That kid just finished his Masters Degree in theology, up in Chicago and I said Cooper, I said, "man, is that more important than the state championship?" He said, yes! And I said "Is that more important than all-state and football?" And he said, "dad, it's the most important thing in the whole wide world." And that's why I believe he just got his degree in theology and he wants to live his whole life just for that cause. I believe that's what Paul's saying here when he says, "run for the prize, run in such a way that you may win."
04:03 I don't think he's talking about shooting holes in one. I think he's talking about taking people to heaven so that when you die, you'll see those people for eternity. So here's the questions today. What are you training for? And then secondly, what's your spiritual workout schedule? Do you have one? If you do, describe it. If you don't, go get one, and in the end you're going to have prize on this earth better than the prizes you could possibly get at some award ceremony or in some trophy case. And the lifeline today is this, what do you diligently work towards? What's your goal? What's the crown that you're working for in your life?

What Are Your Trophies? - 1 Corinthians 2:4-5

"What are your trophies today? Everything else, Paul said, except for our reliance on God and His Spirit, is foolishness."
Family Discussion
- If you achieved Super Bowl status or some equivalent honor, where would you display your trophies?
- Can you recall a time when some thing or some body you relied upon, let you down? Is it possible you were relying upon that thing that you wanted in place of God?
- What are your trophies today? And where are you laying up your trophies for eternity?
Transcription
00:14 As you look around your room today, or as you look around your resume today, what trophies do you see? Today's scripture is going to help define your trophies and my trophies tremendously. Check this out. This is so good you guys. First Corinthians chapter two, verse four and five. Paul says, "and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in the demonstration of the Spirit and of power so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God." That hotel room, the night before the Dallas cowboy game was filled with New York giants. They all had their Super Bowl rings. They had just won the year before, the Super Bowl championship. But on that night, I saw 30 to 35 or 36 players take off their Super Bowl rings and humbly walk down to the little place where I shared that devotional about the chain link of being a Bond Servant of Christ.
01:20 And every one of those guys had to have one of these chain links. Every one of those guys wanted everybody on their team. And everybody that was watching to know that that little leak of chain was more important to them than a Super Bowl ring. Those guys learned that and I would admit to become a bond servant of Jesus. I've see it on football fields all over the country and in basketball locker rooms, where they share the simplicity of the power and the wisdom of God, the Father to the fatherless. And all of a sudden all those trophies and everything that ever made them like the greatest, most praised athletes in the world becomes comparatively nothing in their lives. I coached with Jean Stallings at Texas A&M, this boy, Johnny, who had down syndrome and died a couple of summers ago. Johnny had been given more trophies.
02:09 That boy had been given more badges of honor than you could count. But when I went to his room the night after he died, there wasn't one trophy there, not one, because even as a down syndrome child, a boy who couldn't count to 10, Johnny knew the secret of trophies and he knew the secret of victory. He knew the secret of what really matters in life. Johnny had given all of these trophies away. Johnny knew that his trophies were in heaven. Everything else, Paul said, except for our reliance on God and his spirit, is foolishness. The questions for today are these: if you achieved Super Bowl status or some equivalent honor, where would you display your trophies? And then the next question, can you recall a time when some thing or some body you relied upon, let you down? Is it possible you were relying upon that thing that you wanted in place of God? And then discuss a time when you experienced the power of God. And then lastly, what are your trophies today? And where are you laying up your trophies for eternity? The lifeline today is this: take an inventory of the things you rely upon. If they are anything less than God's spirit, take time today and reconsider.

Using Your Crown for His Glory - Romans 15:18-21

"Preaching Christ happens in a whole lot of ways besides in a church pulpit. Man, I watched my son's best friend, Jill Bronner, the homecoming queen of the high school, preach Christ all over the high school. Even though probably no one remembers a word she said. She preached it by the way she lived."

00:14 Man, as I think about this devotional today day, I just get so excited thinking about, uh, people that are heroes to me. Some of them, you know, kids and some of them are adults that I'd look eye to eye with. But check these verses out and see if this devotional becomes exciting and life changing to you as well. Romans 15 verses 18 through 21, it says this, "for I will not presume to speak of anything except which Christ has accomplished through me. Resulting in the obedience of the gentiles by word, indeed in power and signs and wonders in the power of the spirit so that from Jerusalem and roundabout, as far as Lacranium, I have fully preached the Gospel of Christ." You know what? Preaching Christ happens in a whole lot of ways besides in a church pulpit. Man, I watched my son's best friend, Jill Bronner, the homecoming queen of the high school, preach Christ all over the high school.
01:17 Even though probably no one remembers a word she said. She preached it by the way she lived. That little girl's commitment to purity. I mean, just in every possible way. Purity from alcohol, purely from sex, purity from drugs. Just the way she loved people, you know, high school boyfriend for a whole year and everybody assumed was probably they're drinking, you know, small town having sex and whatever. Not hardly, not, not my little buddy Jill. And then there was Cooper's buddy Erin. Erin Teeter, who was just always leading high school kids to youth group. Always leading her friends to church, you know. Always leading her friends to Christian relationships. And one of the things I love the most about my job at Kanakuk Kamp, I get to be the football coach. And I have 50 players every term in our kamp. 50 high school kids.
02:12 And most of them use their helmet and yes, to play the game, but like a crown of God. They use their football helmet as a mission field so that they can lead their team mates to Christ. I mean, we've got kids all over the country who have a vision to bring their whole team to Christ as they live their life above reproach on the field. And then I've got these adult friends. Tony Cimarusti in Detroit, Michigan. I love you Tony so much. The way Tony is a businessman and a hedge funds manager. Takes his funds and his time and his talent and his life to lead people all over Detroit to Christ by the way he lives. And by the way, he gives. And my wife is undoubtedly my hero. And the way that lady lives in the word in over the decades shares the word of God with the ladies in town.
03:04 You know what? Your crown may be a queen's crown. It maybe a football helmet. It may be a big portfolio in business. Uh, it may be good looks. But you know what? When your mission field is using your crown for him to build his crown of glory. I'm going to tell you there's a crown in heaven and wait for you. That's bigger than any crown possible on Earth. You preach it every day of your life by the way you live. May you wear your crown well. And here's the questions that I'd love for you to discuss today. In practical ways, how can you preach the Gospel in places where it's never been preached before? And, and then, uh, and then this question, you know, there's a mission field in far away Africa no doubt. But where is a mission field that you can enter today? And then lastly, what are some practical ways that you can preach the gospel besides using words? And here's our lifeline. We share this with you the other day, but from Mother Teresa said, witness always. use words when necessary.

God's Approval - John 12:37-43
Wednesday Mar 27, 2019
Wednesday Mar 27, 2019
It's been a few years, but I'll never forget Eric and Joey and Brian and Craig and the other Brian and Jason and Brandon and Ryan, when they'd meet at my home every Friday before school from ninth grade until they graduated for a time of Bible study and to learn to become Christian leaders in their high school.
Family Discussions:
- Why is the approval of men often more valued than the approval of God?
- And as grownups, man, how do we struggle with prioritizing man's approval over God's approval in our life?
- Why is it that God's approval is way more important than man's approval?
- What can you do today to go after God's approval in your life?
Episode Transcription:
00:13 Well, today I want to tell you about a bunch of really cool high school guys that used to eat doughnuts at my house every Friday morning and some of the things we discovered together. We're in John chapter 12, verses 37 through 43, and it says this, "Even after Jesus had done all these miraculous signs in their presence, they still would not believe. But this was to fulfill the word of Isaiah, the prophet which said this, 'Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?' For this reason, they could not believe because as Isaiah says elsewhere, 'He has blinded their eyes and deadened their hearts so they can neither see with their eyes nor understand with their hearts nor turn, and I would heal them.' Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus' glory and spoke about him. Yet at the same time, many even among the leaders believed in him, but because of the Pharisees, they would not confess their faith for fear that they would be put out of the synagogue for they loved the praise of men rather than the praise from God."
01:29 Wow. I tell you, we had a blast together. Man, if anyone missed, they would actually get a doughnut in their locker, in their shoe, or in their book, or in their sports bag so they made strong commitments to be there. And of course their biggest commitment was to God.
02:13 You know, a lot of times these guys, even though they were the best athletes in the school, the neatest guys in school, they weren't invited to the fun parties, you know, down at the lake. People often call them names behind their back, but their senior year in high school four of them were elected football captains, three led the basketball team, two lead the golf team, one received the school spirit award, one was chosen as most outstanding senior. The school won the All Sports Trophy for the conference because those guys pulled the school together like glue. You know what, man? We called them "the guys," and the approval of men was not their worry. The approval of God was far more important. That school will never be the same.
03:00 Here's my questions today. Why is the approval of men often more valued than the approval of God? And as grownups, man, how do we struggle with prioritizing man's approval over God's approval in our life? You know, why is it that God's approval is way more important than man's approval? And lastly, man, what can you do today to go after God's approval in your life? And here's the lifeline that we can work on together as a family, and let's build this family and let's bind this family together for God's approval.

Abundant LIfe - John 10:6-10
Monday Mar 18, 2019

The original Webster's dictionary was written by a devoted Christian man, who like almost all of America's great early scholars, knew the Bible backwards and forwards. Webster defined the word "abundant" as "more than enough."
Family Discussions:
- What's the difference between living and abundant living?
- Why do real believers have more fun?
- Why did God invent fun and happiness and pleasure, and how did He intend for us to have it?
- How abundant is your life today?
- How can we in this family make it even better for each other?
Episode Transcription:
00:15 I love candy, and I love to get more than enough. I love to get my hands just full and running over, especially if it's got chocolate in here. I'm going to tell you a definition of a word today that you're going to love. We're in John chapter 10, verse seven through ten, and it says this, "Therefore, Jesus said again, 'I tell you the truth. I am the gate for the sheep. All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved,' Jesus said. 'He will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy, but I have come that they might have life and have it abundantly.'"
01:02 Abundantly. More than enough. The original Webster's dictionary was written by a devoted Christian man, who like almost all of America's great early scholars, knew the Bible backwards and forwards. Webster defined the word "abundant" as "more than enough." More than enough. Think about it. Jesus came to give abundant life, abundant peace, abundance joy.
01:30 You know, how good looking is more than enough? How much pleasure is more than enough? How much fame and success is more than enough? When Jesus healed the blind man, the guy didn't need to go out and buy a pair of glasses. He saw perfectly. You know, when Jesus fed the 5,000 from one little happy meal that this little kid had, you know, they didn't need to leave that conference and go head for McDonald's. They were full and there were 12 baskets left over. When we stop trying to get high on the stuff of this world? You know, uh, every summer about 20 something thousand kids come to these Christian sports camps that, you know, I get to be involved in to get high on God. Uh, you know, man, I just, I just see, I just see adults, I see kids, you know, tapping into God's abundance all over this country. You know, there's Bible studies of two, four, eight, 10. You know, there's Christian music on the jam box. There's Christian music in the iPods and iPhones, man, in the quiet times before bed. Youth groups with a purpose. Parents encouraging their kids on making honest business decisions. You know, abundant life. I see it in business circles, you know, all over the country. You know, people finding abundance in Christ's abundance. Just live it.
02:56 Hey, here's the questions for the day. What's the difference between living and abundant living? And the second question is why do real believers have more fun? And then thirdly, why did God invent fun and happiness and pleasure, and how did He intend for us to have it? And the thought for the day is this: how abundant is your life today? And man, how can we in this family make it even better for each other?

Lasting Success - John 7:33-34

One of the richest, and you know, as I grew up, one of the most famous athletes who ever lived was a world champion millionaire boxer named Mohammad Ali. You know, no doubt Ali was a boxing phenomenon. The guy was quick as lightning, but one day he said about himself, you know, "I'm the greatest. I'm the greatest."
Family Discussions:
- Jesus said, "What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?" What does that mean to you when Jesus said that?

00:13 Hey today I want to share with you the most interesting, in fact, for me the most memorable, Sports Illustrated article I ever read. The Scripture today comes from John chapter seven, verse 33 and 34, and it says this, "Jesus said, 'I am with you only for a short time, and then I go to the one who sent me. You will look for me, but you will not find me, and where I am, you cannot come."
00:42 You know, there are literally a zillion ways to try to get to God. You can follow Mohammad. You can follow Joseph Smith. You can follow the New Age thing. You can follow any number of men and women who claim to have a shortcut to God, and they end up just like that cut short. You know, you can get so much that you don't even need God. You can get so famous and successful that you might think you sort of are a God, and you see it every day.
01:13 One of the richest, and you know, as I grew up, one of the most famous athletes who ever lived was a world champion millionaire boxer named Mohammad Ali. You know, no doubt Ali was a boxing phenomenon. The guy was quick as lightning, but one day he said about himself, you know, "I'm the greatest. I'm the greatest." Just a few years later, Sports Illustrated did a cover story about this great boxer, and it was probably no more than 15 years after he quit boxing. The writer visited Ali's farm one cold winter day and candidly traced the champs rise and his fall. In the story, the two went out behind the house to Ali's training barn, which was full of his trophies and life-size posters of himself, pictures with Ali's arms thrust high overhead in victory. As the writer and the champ toured the old barn, pigeons overhead in the rafters had left dropping streaked across the posters and the trophies and the boxing gloves that were hung there that he had won the trophies in. One by one, Ali turned them towards the wall in shame and in disgust. He walked outside, and he spoke softly in his self pity. He said, "I had the world, and it wasn't nothing. I had the world, and it wasn't nothing." And then he said, "Look now." Outside, there were no children. There were no swings. There were no slides. There was just emptiness and quietness.
02:42 You know, one time, years ago, the Beatles' owned pop music. They made their self-proclaimed fame obvious. One day they said, "We'll be more popular than Jesus." John Lennon died young, and then the group scattered.
02:57 The questions for today are, you know, Jesus said, "What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?" What does that mean to you when Jesus said that? And then, man, here's when it gets personable. What activity or what kind of thinking are you involved in that could get between you and God? The thought for the day is, man, home is the best place to remind each other that there's no other way to God. There's no other way to success than Jesus Christ himself.

Living Water - John 4:6-10

00:11 Today we're going to look at an awesome story from John chapter four, verses six through 10, and it says this, "And Jacob's well was there, so Jesus being wearied from his journey was sitting by the well. It was about the sixth hour. There came a woman of Samaria to draw water, and Jesus said to her, 'Give me a drink,' for his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. Therefore, the Samaritan woman said to him, 'How is it that you being a Jew ask me for a drink since I'm a Samaritan woman?' For Jews had no dealings with Samaritans. Jesus answered and said to her, 'If you knew the gift of God and who it was who says to you, 'Give me a drink,' you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.'"
01:04 Living water. What a thought. You know water, Coke and Gatorade, Dr Pepper, you name it. You know thirst quenching drinks are on the market. I heard one time that Gatorade paid Michael Jordan double-digit millions just to call him Mike. What an offer! You know, then I heard that Pepsi paid him double-digit millions to drink Pepsi in front of a TV camera. Who knows? But I know from my mission experience that is some starving countries, people will walk over 20 miles for a pitcher of water. It's amazing. You know, all drinks of all kinds have incredible value because of two things. One: people get thirsty. And two: drinks don't permanently quench a thirst, but Jesus said that he quenches your thirst for meaning and purpose in life, and you'll never thirst again as you continue to thirst in and live in him and his word.
03:02 And here's the questions for today. What authority did Jesus have when he told the woman that he was living water? And then why did Jesus called himself living water? And then the third question is this: why does a sincere follower of Christ never thirst for another drink? Not physically, but spiritually. And then the last question is this: how can someone get a drink of living water? And the thought for the day if you're with your family is this: how do you make your home an oasis? Give each other a drink today.
